Back in Vista, Microsoft introduced Desktop Gadgets — small widgets that displayed useful information like the weather, a calendar, CPU usage, or stock updates. They sat neatly on a sidebar or directly on the desktop, always within view.
At the time, gadgets were dismissed as unnecessary eye candy. Security flaws didn’t help their case, and by the time Windows 8 rolled around, Microsoft retired them completely. But today, with modern design, sandboxing, and cloud integration, these widgets could come back stronger — and safer.

With Windows 11’s modern architecture, sandboxing, and AI-powered optimization, this feature could finally shine without slowing down PCs or exposing them to vulnerabilities.

For some, the idea of gadgets will spark nostalgia. For others, it may feel like unnecessary clutter. But Microsoft has been experimenting with ways to make Windows more personal and glanceable — and this could be the missing piece.
